Capabilities of IP-based platforms Presentation systems: Streaming audio & video (live and canned), including WebEx and HorizonLive, bring multimedia to multiple points at low cost. There are relatively modest bandwidth/processing requirements compared to conferencing systems, but the communications are essentially one-way, so, in the absence of other capabilities, this technology is locked into a presentation model. It may, of course, be supplemented by e-mail, instant messaging and collaborative systems. Presentation systems are widely used for both synchronous and asynchronous presentations, but as the cost of IP-based videoconferencing falls dramatically, which it will, we expect to see webcasting relegated to niche uses. |
